Fraction Skills Pretest/Assessment

Each year, I need to spend a lot of time reteaching my middle school students about fractions—what they represent, finding equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions, and all of the fraction operations. They’ve learned these things before but don’t recall them well enough to build on them. I use this pretest to get a baseline on what my students know and understand about fractions so I know where to start my review and where to spend more time and attention!

Sometimes, I only give a few pages of the screener instead of all of them, depending on what I want to assess. Feel free to skip some pages or problems if your students aren’t ready for them!

I prefer printed assessments, like this one, over digital ones, because I learn so much from my students’ work! I analyze each pretest to see where students are making errors, and what partial understanding they have.
